Flat Fred in Blue
Meet Flat Fred.
One of Laurie Brownell McIntosh's most recognizable and beloved reduction linocuts, Flat Fred transforms a familiar Lowcountry flounder into a striking work of art. Inspired by the fish found throughout South Carolina's coastal waters, Fred's distinctive shape, intricate markings, and cool coastal colors create a piece that is both playful and sophisticated.
McIntosh's mastery of the reduction linocut process is on full display here. Each layer of color is hand printed from the same block, which is carved away between printings until the final image emerges. Because the block is gradually destroyed throughout the process, no additional editions can be made once the print run is complete, making every reduction linocut a true original work of printmaking.
Flat Fred has become a favorite among collectors, anglers, and anyone who appreciates Lowcountry life. The clean composition and oversized scale allow the details of the flounder to take center stage, making this piece equally at home in a beach house, fishing lodge, office, or curated coastal collection. This iconic flounder would later become the inspiration for Where's Fred?, Laurie McIntosh's ambitious nine-panel mixed-media installation.
Professionally matted and framed, this signed original reduction linocut arrives ready to hang and enjoy.
