Let’s Follow Her captures a lively group of young sea turtles moving together toward the water, rendered in the unmistakable carved lines and layered color of Laurie McIntosh’s reduction linocut process. Playful at first glance and remarkably intricate up close, the composition is filled with individual turtles, patterned shells, outstretched flippers, and the wonderful sense of movement that makes McIntosh’s work so engaging.

This is not a reproduction. Each Let’s Follow Her print is an original, hand-pulled work of art created individually by McIntosh using the demanding reduction linocut technique sometimes called “suicide printing.” Rather than carving a separate block for each color, the artist works from a single linoleum block, carving away more of the image after each layer of color is printed. The same block is inked and printed repeatedly, with every new carving permanently destroying the portion used to create the previous layer.

Each sheet must therefore pass through the artist’s hands again and again, with every layer carefully carved, inked, registered, and pulled in sequence. Once the final layer is complete, the original block can never be used to recreate the image. The process is both labor-intensive and unforgiving—and it is precisely what makes each finished impression an original piece of printmaking rather than a reproduction of another artwork.

McIntosh’s olive greens, warm ochres, earthy browns, and soft neutrals give the sea turtles a distinctly organic quality, while the hand-carved marks bring movement and personality to every shell and flipper. Small variations inherent to hand printing are part of the character of each impression and evidence of the artist’s hand.

Each original linocut is signed, numbered, and hand-pulled by Laurie McIntosh as part of a limited edition. This matted version is professionally presented and ready for framing, making it an especially fun piece of original coastal art for a beach house, nursery, children’s room, or any home with a love for sea turtles and the South Carolina coast.
