Jelly Dance
Jelly Dance is an award-winning reduction linocut by South Carolina artist Laurie McIntosh that captures the quiet beauty and hypnotic movement of jellyfish drifting through the coastal waters of the Lowcountry. Suspended against a deep indigo background, the glowing forms seem to float effortlessly across the composition, their delicate tentacles trailing behind them like ribbons in an underwater ballet. Both dramatic and serene, the piece evokes the wonder of encountering marine life in its natural environment and invites viewers to slow down and appreciate the elegance hidden beneath the surface.
Created using the traditional reduction linocut process, every layer of Jelly Dance was carved and printed by hand from a single block. Often referred to as "suicide printing," this demanding technique requires the artist to permanently carve away portions of the block between each color layer, making every decision irreversible. The result is a work of extraordinary craftsmanship, rich with texture, depth, and subtle detail. Laurie's mastery of the medium is evident throughout the piece, from the luminous coral tones of the jellyfish to the intricate marks that create movement, light, and atmosphere.
Jelly Dance earned a Blue Ribbon at the 2025 South Carolina State Fair Fine Arts Competition, an honor that recognized both its technical excellence and artistic achievement. The award reflects not only the complexity of the reduction linocut process but also the strength of Laurie's vision as one of the region's most accomplished printmakers.
Printed on archival fine art paper and signed and numbered by the artist, Jelly Dance represents the finest traditions of contemporary printmaking while remaining deeply connected to the coastal landscape that inspires Laurie's work. Its combination of movement, color, craftsmanship, and subject matter makes it especially appealing to collectors of coastal art, marine imagery, and original printmaking.
Elegant, distinctive, and impossible to overlook, Jelly Dance is more than a beautiful coastal artwork—it is a celebrated, award-winning original that brings sophistication, conversation, and a sense of wonder to any collection.
