All Saints Parish
A print by Mary Ellen Golden, a celebrated watercolor artist known for her captivating portrayals of the beloved landmarks of Pawleys Island. Her paintings beautifully reflect the charm, light, and laid-back spirit of coastal South Carolina. Few artists have captured the heart of Pawleys quite like Mary Ellen, and her work graces the walls of many local homes.
All Saints Church in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, is a historic church and nationally recognized historic district that reflects centuries of local heritage. Established in 1739, the church has occupied its current site ever since. The present sanctuary, built around 1916, is a fine example of Classical Revival architecture, thoughtfully designed to echo the church’s earlier 19th-century sanctuary, which was lost to fire in 1915.
The surrounding cemetery, dating back to the 1820s, is notable both for its remarkable gravestone art—spanning from about 1820 to 1900—and for the prominent figures of antebellum Georgetown County buried there. Among them is Alice Flagg, the subject of one of Pawleys Island’s most enduring ghost legends. In 1991, the church complex was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places, cementing its place as a treasured part of South Carolina’s Lowcountry history.
