Red Drum
Red Drum by South Carolina artist Aaron Baldwin is an original, hand-pulled linocut celebrating one of the most iconic fish of the South Carolina coast. Baldwin places the red drum at the center of the composition, carving the distinctive scales, fins, and signature spot near its tail in remarkable detail. Schools of tiny baitfish circle the border, while marsh grasses and water surround the fish within the central oval, creating a piece that feels unmistakably rooted in the Lowcountry.
Rendered in rich shades of blue, the bold composition has a graphic quality from a distance, but the closer you look, the more there is to discover. Individual scales, ripples of water, blades of marsh grass, and dozens of small fish emerge from Baldwin’s hand-carved marks, giving the piece an extraordinary amount of texture and movement.
This is not a reproduction of an original artwork. Each Red Drum is itself an original, hand-pulled work of art created through the traditional linocut printmaking process. Baldwin begins by carving the image by hand into a block, removing the areas that will remain unprinted. The carved surface is then inked, paper is carefully positioned over the block, and the image is pulled by hand. Because every impression is individually inked and pulled, subtle variations are inherent to the process and are part of what makes each piece unique.
Signed and numbered by Aaron Baldwin, Red Drum is a striking piece for anyone who loves fishing, coastal wildlife, or the landscape and traditions of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Available at Gray Man Gallery in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
