Eastern Wild Turkey

Sale price$75.00

Eastern Wild Turkey by South Carolina artist Aaron Baldwin is an original, hand-pulled linocut celebrating one of the most familiar inhabitants of the Southern landscape. A wild turkey stands prominently in the foreground, surrounded by tall grasses and a dense stand of pines, while Baldwin’s hand-carved lettering identifies both the subject—“Eastern Wild Turkey”—and its setting in the “Lowcountry South Carolina.”

Printed in dramatic black and white, the piece is packed with the kind of detail that rewards a closer look. Baldwin builds the turkey’s feathers from layer upon layer of individual carved marks, then carries that same intricate linework through the grasses, tree trunks, and wooded background. The contrast between broad areas of deep black and finely carved white lines gives the composition a bold graphic presence while retaining the unmistakable character of a work made entirely by hand.

This is not a reproduction of an original artwork. Each Eastern Wild Turkey is itself an original, hand-pulled work of art created through the traditional linocut printmaking process. Baldwin begins by carving the image by hand into a block, removing the areas that will remain unprinted. The carved surface is then inked, paper is carefully positioned over the block, and the image is pulled by hand. Because every impression is individually inked and pulled, subtle variations are inherent to the process and are part of what makes each piece unique.

Signed and numbered by Aaron Baldwin, Eastern Wild Turkey is a striking piece for anyone drawn to sporting art, Southern wildlife, or the landscape and traditions of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Available at Gray Man Gallery in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
