Palmetto Fronds #212

Sale price$450.00

Palmetto Fronds #212 is an original oil on paper by local artist Retta Dotterer, taking one of the South Carolina coast’s most familiar sights and bringing it in close. Overlapping palmetto fronds fill the composition, creating an almost abstract rhythm of sweeping lines, fan-shaped leaves, and layered color.

Retta works beyond the expected greens of the palmetto, building the foliage with olive, ochre, deep forest green, muted blue, warm brown, and flashes of coral and pink. Her loose, energetic brushwork captures the movement and texture of the fronds without over-defining them, while glimpses of pale blue between the leaves give the dense composition room to breathe. The hand-painted pink border adds another unexpected hit of color and makes the entire piece feel fresh and contemporary.

Painted in oil on paper, Palmetto Fronds #212 is a distinctly Southern subject seen through Retta’s expressive point of view. It’s bold, textural, and unmistakably coastal without relying on a traditional beach or marsh scene—a one-of-a-kind original that brings a little piece of the South Carolina landscape indoors.
