North Inlet Oyster

Sale price$650.00

North Inlet Oyster is an original charcoal drawing inspired by the delicate yet powerful relationship between oysters and water quality in South Carolina’s coastal ecosystems. Rendered with remarkable sensitivity and depth, the piece centers on a single oyster form—both sculptural and anatomical—inviting close observation and quiet reflection.

Selected for South Carolina Sea Grant’s juried exhibition Beyond the Surface at Tiger Strikes Asteroid Gallery in Greenville, South Carolina, this work was created in response to research exploring the interconnected nature of oysters and water quality. North Inlet serves as an ideal study system: a pristine estuary with minimal surrounding development, offering a rare glimpse into a balanced coastal environment.

Oysters themselves play a critical role in maintaining that balance. As natural filter feeders, they actively improve water quality by removing excess nutrients and particulates from the water column. This drawing reflects that essential function—elevating the oyster from overlooked shellfish to quiet ecological steward.

The original artwork measures 16 × 20 inches and has been professionally matted to 20 × 24 inches, allowing it to fit standard readymade frames, including framing options available at Gray Man Gallery. Thoughtful, restrained, and deeply rooted in place, North Inlet Oyster is a compelling acquisition for collectors drawn to coastal science, environmental art, and contemporary Southern narratives.
