Seagull #9
Seagulls are as much a part of the South Carolina coast as salt marshes, fishing boats, and weathered docks. In Seagull #9, artist Nick Kawczynski captures one of the Lowcountry’s most familiar residents with his signature blend of humor, craftsmanship, and reclaimed materials.
This one-of-a-kind sculpture is handcrafted from marine-grade plywood salvaged through Nick’s volunteer work with the Lowcountry Maritime Society. The organization teaches students to build traditional Bevin’s skiffs throughout the school year, and rather than letting the leftover materials go to waste, Nick transforms the scrap wood into original coastal artwork. Every cut, curve, and painted detail is completed by hand, giving each piece its own distinct personality.
Mounted to a beautifully weathered reclaimed wooden base, this seagull feels right at home in a beach house, waterfront cottage, lake home, or coastal-inspired space. The simple silhouette and soft palette evoke the easygoing character of the Carolina coast while celebrating the craftsmanship and resourcefulness behind the work itself.
Like all of Nick’s sculptures, Seagull #9 is a true one-of-one original. While themes may occasionally reappear throughout his body of work, no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Each sculpture reflects the materials available at the time and the artist’s evolving interpretation of coastal life.
