Poundahs 'n Floundahs

Poundahs 'n Floundahs is a one-of-a-kind mixed media sculpture by Charleston artist Nick Kawczynski that combines Lowcountry fishing culture, coastal humor, and reclaimed craftsmanship into a piece that is impossible to walk past without smiling.

Three hand-painted flounder appear to climb a towering "Pounder Light" beer can in this playful coastal sculpture, a tongue-in-cheek tribute to dockside fish tales, cold drinks after a day on the water, and the laid-back spirit of life along the South Carolina coast. Full of character and movement, the piece captures the kind of humor that has made Nick's work a favorite among anglers, boaters, and coastal art collectors alike.

What makes this sculpture especially meaningful is the story behind the materials. The fish and decorative elements are cut from reclaimed marine-grade plywood sourced through the Lowcountry Maritime Society, where Nick volunteers. The organization teaches local students traditional boatbuilding skills by guiding them through the construction of Bevins skiffs during the school year. Once the boats are completed and launched, the remaining wood scraps are saved rather than discarded. Nick transforms those remnants into original works of art, giving new purpose to materials that were once destined for the water.

Every cut, curve, and painted detail is completed by hand, making each sculpture a unique expression of the artist's imagination. While Nick may revisit certain themes throughout his work, no two pieces are ever exactly alike. The reclaimed wood, hand-painted surfaces, and individual construction ensure that every sculpture has its own personality and story.
