Family Going to the Beach
Family Going to the Beach is an original mixed media assemblage by Charleston artist Nick Kawczynski that captures a familiar summer ritual along the South Carolina coast: loading up the chairs, buckets, toys, and surfboards and making the trek to the beach.
Constructed from reclaimed materials, the piece features a hand-painted family cut from marine-grade plywood and mounted onto a stretched section of found beach chair fabric, complete with an authentic beach chair arm incorporated into the composition. The result is a nostalgic scene that feels instantly recognizable to anyone who has spent summers along the coast.
Nick's work is rooted in reuse, reinvention, and storytelling. By transforming discarded materials into artwork, he creates pieces that are both environmentally conscious and deeply connected to the experiences that inspire them. Here, a worn beach chair becomes more than an object—it becomes part of the story itself, evoking memories of family vacations, sandy feet, and long days spent by the water.
Every element of this one-of-a-kind sculpture has been thoughtfully assembled by hand. The dimensional construction creates depth, texture, and personality that simply can't be replicated in a traditional painting.
Materials: Acrylic paint, patterned beach chair material, reclaimed beach chair arm, marine-grade plywood, and hardware.
