Aids to Navigation

Sale price$850.00

Rooted in firsthand coastal fieldwork, Aids to Navigation is a two-piece installation by Lowcountry artist Maggie Pelton that blends scientific observation with abstracted landscape. Created in acrylic and ink, the paired works are based on drone imagery of Crabhaul Creek, where Pelton conducts low-tide sampling as part of her work at the Baruch Marine Field Lab. The imagery traces the careful navigation paths required to gather samples while avoiding shallow sandbars that emerge at low tide.

The larger 16 x 16 panel establishes the primary flow of the creek, with sinuous channels cutting through textured marsh forms. The accompanying 8 x 8 piece functions as a visual counterpart—an echo or fragment that reinforces the idea of movement, mapping, and decision-making on the water. Together, the two works read like an aerial study in restraint and precision, balancing muted coastal tones with subtle markings that reference both terrain and data.

Sold as a single installation, Aids to Navigation offers flexibility in presentation while maintaining a clear conceptual connection between the two pieces. Both works come professionally custom framed by Gray Man Gallery and are ready to hang, offering a finished, gallery-quality presentation from the moment they arrive. Thoughtful, contemporary, and deeply tied to place, this installation reflects Pelton’s unique ability to translate coastal science into compelling visual form.
