Kirk Battle

Lawyer by day. Historical fiction writer by night. Kirk Battle is a Conway native, Pawleys Island attorney, Sewanee graduate, and storyteller with a particular fascination for the complicated history of the South. Born in Conway, South Carolina, Kirk graduated from Sewanee: The University of the South in 2005 with honors in English Literature before earning his law degree from the Charleston School of Law.

When he isn’t practicing law in Pawleys Island, Kirk writes historical fiction that digs into the people, places, and complicated stories of the South. His novel These Hallowed Halls: Sewanee, 1860 brings readers to the University of the South on the eve of the Civil War, telling the story through eight distinct voices—from freed slaves and Confederate veterans to widows, townspeople, and students.

Drawing on his own connection to Sewanee and his love of Southern history, Kirk writes about the past as something lived rather than simply recorded. His work explores the contradictions, personalities, and human experiences behind history, with a strong sense of place that feels especially at home here in the Lowcountry.

Kirk lives and works in Pawleys Island, where he practices law, writes, podcasts, and somehow apparently still finds time to do public speaking.
