Gary Johnston

Gary Johnston (1950 - 2023) was passionate about golf and painting. A structural engineer by trade, he took up watercolor painting in 2005 and quickly developed a deep commitment to the craft. Over the years, he studied with dozens of artists through classes and workshops, becoming a prolific painter known for his expressive landscapes, beachscapes, golf courses, and loose portraits.

Gary and his wife of nearly 50 years, Rosemary, lived in Olmsted Falls, Ohio, but Pawleys Island held a special place in their hearts. They honeymooned there and returned year after year. In 2023, while playing golf in Pawleys, Gary passed away unexpectedly.

Today, Gray Man Gallery is honored to feature Gary’s work, celebrating both his artistic legacy and his enduring connection to Pawleys Island. His paintings reflect not only his talent but also the places and passions that defined his life.
