Libby Smart
Raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, Libby Smart discovered her love of painting at an early age and has spent more than twenty-five years developing a style that is unmistakably her own. After earning a degree in Interior Design from Converse College, she founded the successful decorative painting business Paint Smart before following her passion for fine art full time. Since then, she has continued to evolve her work through study with respected artists both in the United States and abroad.
Libby's paintings are inspired by the places that have stayed with her throughout her life—from mountain trails and gardens to the coastlines of the Carolinas. Having spent years visiting Garden City, Myrtle Beach, Litchfield, Debordieu, and now Pawleys Island, she has developed a deep appreciation for the beauty of the Lowcountry. Rather than painting a landscape exactly as it appears, she captures its atmosphere through expressive brushwork, layered color, and a sense of movement that invites viewers to linger and explore.
Known for her fearless use of color and intuitive compositions, Libby's paintings balance representation and abstraction, allowing familiar landscapes and botanicals to emerge naturally from richly textured layers of paint. Every piece reflects her belief that art should evoke a feeling as much as a place, creating work that is both joyful and deeply personal.
In addition to maintaining an active studio practice, Libby enjoys sharing her passion for painting by teaching workshops throughout the Southeast. Her work has been featured in Charlotte Home Design, Today's Charlotte Woman, and Stroll Debordieu Colony, and is represented by galleries across the Southeast.
Gray Man Gallery is proud to welcome Libby Smart to Pawleys Island. Her paintings celebrate the color, movement, and natural beauty of the places that make the Carolina coast so special, and we're honored to share her work with collectors throughout the Lowcountry.
