Rather than focusing on monuments or architecture, Retta turns her attention to the cemetery’s extraordinary natural setting, where old trees, dense foliage, and long curtains of Spanish moss create a landscape that feels quiet, layered, and distinctly Lowcountry.

Retta’s loose, expressive brushwork transforms the scene into a study of color and atmosphere. Deep olive and forest greens mingle with warm browns, muted lavender, blue-gray, and soft neutral tones, while strokes of pink peek through the layers of foliage. Long, gestural marks suggest Spanish moss hanging from the branches, giving the painting a wonderful sense of movement and depth without over-defining the landscape.

Painted in oil on paper, Magnolia Cemetery I #218 balances the history and character of its Charleston setting with Retta’s fresh, contemporary approach. Her signature hand-painted pink border provides a vivid contrast to the earthy palette and makes the edge of the paper an intentional part of the work. It’s a one-of-a-kind interpretation of one of Charleston’s most atmospheric landscapes and a beautiful piece of original Lowcountry art.

11.25"W x 10"H

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0665/3129/5387/files/retta-dotterer-magnolia-cemetery-i-218-original-oil-on-paper-charleston-lowcountry-art-gray-man-gallery-pawleys-island.jpg?v=1791306000
